Core Development and Sensory Processing: From Lips to Hips and Back Again
The 2013 Camp Avanti Pre-Camp ConferenceStillwater, MN—June 27, 2013
While midline development has always been known as a critical element for sensory motor development, recent interest and focus on the “core” has taken the concept to greater depth. New insights and perspectives regarding the relationships of oral structures/functions and reflexes to core development will be discussed.
Topics will include the following: rationale for treating the mouth to gain full motor and sensory foundations for eye, hand, neck and core development and reflex maturity; airway structures and the importance of posture and breath for regulation, sleep, and core sensory motor function; primitive reflexes and how they provide the foundations essential for a functional core that underlies all sensory motor function.
Presenters will provide treatment suggestions for the topics considered.
Objectives:
Participants will be able to do the following:
Participants will be able to do the following:
- Describe the functional relationships among eyes, hands, oral structures/functions, head, neck, trunk, hips, breath, and core.
- Implement treatment strategies to address disruptions in core development, reflex maturity, and oral, head and neck functions.
